So, today is the day, huh?

I’ve heard discussion over the last few years, as most of us have I’m sure, about the Mayan Calendar ending on December 21st, 2012. Well, that’s right now. This is it. Here we are. And I figure if I’m spending all this time overseeing some drastic changes on my website, and learning how best to keep in touch with all of you better, it would be a shame to let it all go to waste by not even POSTING something before our time was up here. But, what to post?

That’s a big question. A VERY big question. I mean, if this were my last day on earth, I should probably say something deep and profound. Something wise beyond my years. A perfectly constructed epistle of knowledge and information designed to help inspire and ignite hope to all. Well, I don’t think I’m capable of that, but the one thing my mind keeps coming back to is quite simply, gratitude.

Pure gratitude for life in general. Gratitude for all that I have been blessed with each day. Not just for the things I can feel and see, but even for the things unbeknownst to me, yet I recognize are still there. The tender mercies and miracles that are constantly happening all around me. How I drove home tonight without an accident. The mere fact that my heart continues to beat on its own. How I was granted my time on earth right now, with so many amenities of ease and comfort.

Pure gratitude for the good all around me. But also for the challenges, difficulties, and tests I’ve experienced, and will inevitably yet experience. It is by way of the hard times that makes me stronger, and allows me to feel even greater appreciation for all that I have, all that I am, and all that I may become. Of course, this is contingent upon if I allow myself to see it that way. A choice. An attitude of gratitude.

I guess I ultimately have The Mayans to thank for helping remind me how much life is preciously fragile. How each day is a gift. How each moment given to us is magical. To hold my wife and two little girls just a little bit closer today, and thank God for them and giving me this opportunity at life. At the end of the day, tomorrow is never really guaranteed for any of us.

But if tomorrow does come, which it will, may we live each day as if it were our Last Day.

~ DO

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
